About the Lingobox KS2 French Scheme of Work

Lingobox Year 6 French brings together learning from across the primary programme through an imaginary trip to Paris for a Global Schools Sports Competition.

Learners use French to compete, plan, prepare and connect with children from around the world. The emphasis is on retrieving, combining and applying familiar French with increasing confidence and independence.

The programme is designed to be manageable, flexible and engaging — even for non-specialist teachers.

Getting Started

We recommend timetabling the 20 core lessons into your forward plans before starting. Each Year 6 lesson is designed to run for around 30–45 minutes and can be taught as a complete session or split into shorter activities across the week.

Teachers can select the activities that best suit their learners, available time and school context. The programme regularly revisits familiar language, so children can pause and return to learning without losing continuity.

Year 6 is deliberately designed as an application year. Encourage learners to use everything they already know, combine familiar language in new ways and use phonics, context, dictionaries and previous resources to support increasing independence.

How It Works

Below and in the Year 6 Lesson Lingobox, you’ll find 20 complete French lessons covering the 12 Year 6 language outcomes.

Across the year, learners use numbers, sports, travel, prices, weather, clothes and personal language for real purposes within one connected storyline.

Each lesson follows a simple structure of four to five short activities:

The programme is built around one simple premise: your school has been invited to Paris to take part in an international schools sporting event. Children are attending from all over the world. They speak different languages and come from different places, but they have one thing in common — they’re all learning French.

Learning is structured across four connected blocks:

• Compete: numbers to 100, sports, jouer and faire

• Plan: future plans, prices, money and budgeting

• Prepare: weather, temperatures, months, clothes and packing

• Connect: meet, communicate and celebrate with learners from around the world

Lingobox Click & Teach Lessons

Each Lingobox lesson contains a sequence of short activities designed to revisit previous learning, introduce or extend language, provide active practice and support learners in applying French for meaningful purposes.

Our lessons are designed to be “Click & Teach”: planning, audio, games, videos, songs, instructions and teacher support are provided at the click of a button.

Across Year 6, learners take part in activities including:

3. Recognise and name familiar sports.

4. Talk about sports using je joue and je fais.

5. Use je vais to talk about future plans.

6. Plan a trip to Paris.

7. Talk about clothes and outfits.

8. Read and understand short French texts.

9. Ask and answer familiar questions.

10. Express choices, opinions and reactions.

11. Apply familiar French in practical situations.

12. Combine familiar French with confidence.

Year 6 French Core Programme – 20 Lessons

Follow the structured 20-lesson sequence below. Across the programme, learners prepare for a trip to Paris and the Global Schools Festival, before arriving in Paris and applying their French in fun, practical and cultural contexts.

Learning Through One Connected Story

Year 6 is designed as one connected journey rather than four separate topics.

Compete → Plan → Prepare → Connect

Children begin by preparing for the Global Schools Sports Competition, plan their journey to Paris, investigate budgets and travel choices, prepare for the weather and finally arrive at the international event where they use French to communicate with other young people.

Previously learned language is deliberately recycled throughout. Numbers become scores, temperatures and prices. Opinions become choices. Personal language becomes real conversation. Phonics, dictionary skills and decoding strategies support learners whenever they encounter new language.

Progression from Year 5 to Year 6 French

Year 6 builds on the growing independence developed in Year 5 and gives learners increasingly purposeful reasons to retrieve, combine and apply familiar French.

Optional Enrichment Activities

Enrichment activities provide additional opportunities to revisit and extend Year 6 learning through seasonal, cultural, active and cross-curricular contexts.

Teachers can select activities that best fit their timetable and wider school learning. Paris, sport, global citizenship, travel, sustainability, French culture and outdoor learning all connect naturally with the Year 6 programme.

Around 8–12 enrichment activities across the year are recommended, with schools free to use as many as they wish.

Assessment & Tracking

Assessment in Year 6 is embedded naturally through speaking and listening activities, cooperative challenges, teacher observation, Quick Quizzes and Star Tracker activities.

The emphasis is on recognising how effectively learners can retrieve, combine and apply French rather than testing isolated vocabulary.

Checkpoint lessons provide opportunities to reflect on progress, apply language in meaningful contexts and identify growing confidence and independence.

The final Global Schools Meet-Up provides a culminating opportunity for learners to use French for its most important purpose: communicating with other people.

In Year 6, resist the temptation to teach every word children might need. Encourage learners to retrieve language they already know, adapt model sentences, use phonics and dictionaries and make choices about what they want to communicate.

The goal is not to know every French word — it is to know how to use French.
