Lingobox Year 2 French builds on earlier French learning and helps children move from familiar words and phrases towards short linked sentences, opinions, simple questions and meaningful classroom conversations.

Getting Started

We recommend timetabling your lessons into your forward plans before starting. Each Year 2 lesson is designed to run for around 30–45 minutes, although activities can also be used in shorter bursts across the week.

Lessons can be delivered as a full session or split into shorter activities. All activity timings are included in lesson packs.

The programme uses a spiral progression structure, meaning key language is revisited regularly through routines, conversations, songs and games.

We actively encourage revisiting favourite activities, Active Language Learn videos and classroom routines to support fluency and confidence.

How It Works

Below and in the Year 2 Lesson Lingobox, you’ll find 20 complete French lessons covering the 12 Year 2 language outcomes.

The programme develops confidence, communication and sentence-building through repetition, interaction and engaging activities. Each lesson follows a simple structure of four to five short activities:

Review → Teach → Practise → Check for learning

Everything is organised in one place, including lessons, videos, songs, audio, games, printables, Star Trackers and Learning Journal activities.

By the end of the programme, learners can take part in short conversations, express simple opinions, ask politely for objects, food and drinks, say where they live, and link ideas using familiar French.

🌟 Year 2 French – The Lingobox 12 Learning Outcomes

12 Learning Outcomes

These outcomes describe the key learning intentions for the full Year 2 programme. They represent what we are working towards across the year. As every child progresses at their own pace, some learners may achieve all of these outcomes during Year 2, while others will continue to develop them in subsequent years.

Spiral Approach

Language is revisited throughout the year, continually spiralling back to previous learning from both earlier years and earlier blocks within the Year 2 programme. This helps children retrieve prior learning, strengthen understanding and build confidence through repeated, meaningful practice.

Purposeful Language

All language has been carefully selected so it can be used throughout classroom practice, wider learning and everyday routines. This helps children see French as a natural part of the school day rather than something learned only during language lessons. You’ll find practical ideas for embedding French across the curriculum within each individual lesson plan.

These are broad end-of-year outcomes. Weekly Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and the Year 2 Learning Journal & Star Tracker provide more detailed guidance on progression and assessment throughout the programme.

Over the course of Year 2, we are learning to:

1. Count and recognise numbers from 1–31.

2. Say and understand the days of the week.

3. Say and understand the months of the year.

4. Begin to say dates.

5. Recognise and describe different types of weather.

6. Identify and discuss the seasons.

7. Say whether they like or dislike something.

8. Say where they live.

9. Recognise and name classroom objects.

10. Ask politely for food, drinks and classroom objects.

11. Join ideas together using et (and).

12. Demonstrate understanding of French culture through songs, role play and celebrations.

🌟 The 20-Lesson Core Year 2 French Programme

At Lingobox, we believe in creating programmes that are genuinely manageable for busy teachers. Our planning is designed to fit realistically within curriculum demands and limited teaching time.

• • 20 ready-to-teach lessons organised into four teaching blocks using a spiral progression.

• • Language is revisited and gradually extended, helping children build confidence through repeated exposure and meaningful practice.

  • Every lesson includes a complete teaching pack with a planner, teaching videos, songs, games, audio and interactive activities.

  • Lessons last approximately 30–45 minutes and can be taught in one session or broken into shorter activities across the week.

  • Teach as much or as little of each lesson as you need. Activities are flexible, allowing you to pause, revisit and adapt learning to suit your class.

  • The programme is designed to be taught sequentially, but you can easily stop and restart throughout the year without losing progression.

🔤 Language Focus in Year 2

In Year 2, vocabulary, grammar and phonics are explored together through listening, speaking, songs, games, shared reading and supported sentence-building.

📈 Progression from Year 1 to Year 2 French

Lingobox French follows a spiral progression across the seven-year pathway. Year 2 revisits familiar language from Year 1 and supports learners in combining it with growing confidence and purpose.

🌼 Optional Enrichment Lessons

• • Enrichment activities are short, standalone learning experiences that complement the core 20-lesson programme.

• • They revisit and extend core language through seasonal, cultural, cross-curricular and real-life contexts, helping children build confidence through meaningful repetition.

  • Use as many enrichment activities as you wish. We recommend around 8–12 activities per year to provide a balanced and engaging programme.

  • Choose activities that suit your class, seasonal events, wider learning and the interests of your learners.

• French films and simple opinions

• Christmas in France

• Epiphany / La Fête des Rois (6th January French traditions)

• Poisson d’avril (April Fools)

🎯 Learning Intentions, Success Criteria & Child-Friendly Learning Statements

Each Lingobox lesson includes clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria to support high-quality, developmentally appropriate KS1 language learning.

Learning Intentions

Learning Intentions outline the purpose of the lesson – what children are exploring, practising or being introduced to. Because language learning develops gradually and requires repeated exposure, Lingobox uses “We are learning to…” statements within lessons and Geniallys.

This phrasing reflects the ongoing, confidence-building nature of language learning: children are not expected to master new language immediately. Instead, they build confidence over time through songs, games, movement, conversation and repeated encounters with familiar words and phrases.

Success Criteria

Success Criteria are provided for every lesson to support teachers in understanding progression, planning differentiation, and recognising small but meaningful steps in children’s learning.

Child-friendly learning statements — “We are learning to…”

At KS1, language learning remains gradual, active and highly repetitive. Children need many opportunities to revisit and use new words across different contexts before they begin to feel confident.

This approach supports all learners, including those who are shy, less confident, or learning English as an additional language. It places the emphasis on shared exploration, growing confidence and meaningful participation.

Opportunities to reflect on progress are embedded naturally through plenary routines, teacher observation and the Learning Journal & Star Tracker activities. This approach to assessing progress prioritises celebration, recognition and a growing sense of confidence – without the need for formal testing.

🌈 Learning Experiences in Year 2

In Year 2, French develops through active, memorable and meaningful experiences woven throughout the year:

• Singing and responding to French songs with actions, rhythm and repeated language

• Playing games that encourage sentence-building, choice and confidence

• Taking part in short conversations with partners, groups and the whole class

• Using French in real-life contexts such as classroom requests, food and café role play

• Exploring France and French culture through towns, food, music, festivals and celebration activities

• Reflecting on progress through Learning Journal and Star Tracker activities

📝 Assessment & Tracking Overview

Lingobox assessment in Year 2 French is child-centred, celebrates success, and promotes engagement and motivation.

Celebrating progress — even very small steps — helps create a positive, joyful learning culture. It reinforces to learners that their efforts matter and that learning a new language is an exciting, impressive achievement.

Here are some simple ways you can celebrate French learning in school and at home:

• Invite another class to visit and learn a French song, question or game from the children.

• Hold a mini French café celebration using menus, role play and polite French language.

• Create a French display showing favourite colours, French towns, weather, seasons or classroom objects.

• Encourage children to teach a family member a French word, phrase, question or song.
