About the Lingobox KS2 French Scheme of Work

Lingobox Year 6 French builds on earlier learning and supports children in becoming increasingly confident and independent language learners.

Learners revisit familiar French, strengthen number and conversation skills, develop their understanding of phonics and dictionary use, explore countries and languages, and communicate more personally through favourites and positive qualities.

The programme is designed to be manageable, flexible and engaging — even for non-specialist teachers.

Getting Started

We recommend timetabling your lessons into your forward plans before starting. Each Year 6 lesson is designed to run for around 30–45 minutes, although activities can also be used in shorter bursts across the week.

If you do not cover every activity, simply select those that best suit your class, available time and learners’ needs. The spiral structure means that important language and skills are regularly revisited and reinforced.

Year 6 places increasing emphasis on learner independence. Encourage children to use phonics, language patterns, context and dictionary skills to investigate unfamiliar French.

Year 6 French Core Programme – 20 Lessons

Block 1: French Goals! Birthdays, familiar conversations and numbers to 80. Retrieving earlier learning, building conversational confidence and setting personal French goals.	Lesson 1: When Is Your Birthday? – revisit months and dates, ask C’est quand ton anniversaire ? and use Mon anniversaire, c’est le… to understand and share birthdays.
	Lesson 2: French Goals – Birthdays & Self – revisit familiar questions and personal information before creating conversation cards and building confidence through partner and whole-class speaking games.
	Lesson 3: French Goals – Numbers Challenge – identify existing number knowledge, set a personal counting goal and investigate the pattern used to build French numbers from 70 to 79.
	Lesson 4: Numbers 0–80 – retrieve the French number sequence, recognise written numbers and develop listening accuracy and quick recall through active games and challenges.
	Lesson 5: Checkpoint 1 – French Goals – apply speaking, listening and number skills in cooperative mystery challenges, complete the Star Tracker and reflect on confidence and personal next steps.
Block 2: French Language Explorers The French alphabet, vowels, phonics and sound–spelling patterns. Using sounds and patterns to predict pronunciation, decode words and become a more independent language learner.	Lesson 6: Alphabet Explorers – recognise and say French letter sounds, spell familiar words and listen carefully to identify words spelled using French letter names.
	Lesson 7: Vowel Explorers – identify and pronounce the five French vowels and use actions, listening and prediction activities to explore how vowel sounds appear in French words.
	Lesson 8: Phonics Explorer – The Letter E – investigate the different sounds of e, é and è, hear the differences between them and use phonics knowledge to predict the pronunciation of French words.
	Lesson 9: Phonics Explorers 2 – explore how French letters and vowels combine to create new sounds, investigate nasal-vowel patterns and apply phonics clues when reading unfamiliar words.
	Lesson 10: Checkpoint 2 – French Phonics – retrieve alphabet, vowel and phonics knowledge through practical challenges, explore the French Phonics Pack and create and perform a cooperative phonics rap.
Block 3: My Multilingual World Countries, articles, en, au and aux, languages and the Francophone world. Using French to explore countries, celebrate multilingualism and investigate languages around the world.	Lesson 11: Countries – learn and locate country names in French, investigate le, la, l’ and les, and use dictionary skills to discover unfamiliar country vocabulary.
	Lesson 12: Countries 2 – Where Do You Live? – revisit countries, investigate patterns in en, au and aux, and ask and answer Où habites-tu ? using a personal response.
	Lesson 13: Our Languages – identify key information in multilingual profiles, use Je parle… to discuss languages and complete a class survey using Tu parles quelles langues ?
	Lesson 14: World Languages – listen to and compare global languages, investigate language facts cooperatively and create a group poster celebrating multilingualism and language learning.
	Lesson 15: Checkpoint 3 – My Multilingual World – revisit countries through an active map challenge, create a badge celebrating the languages learners speak or study and review progress using the Star Tracker.
Block 4: Me & My Favourite Things Favourite things, mon, ma and mes, adjective agreement and positive qualities. Combining familiar French to express preferences, describe personal qualities and create increasingly detailed personal profiles.	Lesson 16: My Favourites 1 – explore patterns in mon, ma and mes, investigate préféré and préférée, and build complete sentences about favourite things.
	Lesson 17: My Favourites 2 – create personalised sentences, ask and answer questions about favourite things and use class results to revisit familiar numbers and opinions.
	Lesson 18: My Qualities – learn positive personality adjectives, investigate masculine and feminine forms and use Je suis…, très and assez to describe personal qualities.
	Lesson 19: My Qualities 2 – retrieve familiar qualities, listen to and read personal descriptions for key information and create a fuller profile combining qualities and favourite things.
	Lesson 20: Checkpoint 4 – This Is Me! – revisit familiar questions through a Talking Games Carousel, develop conversational fluency, complete the final Star Tracker and celebrate progress across the Year 6 programme.

Year 6 Daily Language Pack

Use the Year 6 Daily Language Pack to make French part of your everyday classroom routine. Revisit familiar questions, greetings, dates, weather and other useful language regularly to strengthen recall and build learners’ confidence.
